In a time when citizens yearn for leaders who deliver real change, Hon. Otoro Mary Illah, Councilor representing Ogoja Urban Ward 2, continues to stand out as a beacon of dedication, compassion, and grassroots impact.
As she marks one year in office, her journey has been defined by action, faith, and an unwavering commitment to the welfare of her people — demonstrated through tangible projects and community-centered leadership.
Hon. Otoro began her one-year scorecard presentation with deep appreciation to His Excellency, Senator (Prince) Bassey Edet Otu, Governor of Cross River State, and His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, Deputy Governor, for their consistent leadership and commitment to grassroots development.
She also commended the Chairman of Ogoja Local Government Area, Hon. Chris Agbeh, and the Vice Chairman, Hon. Emmanuel Idi Yakubu, for their steadfast support and dedication to community progress. Their teamwork, she noted, has created an enabling environment for effective service delivery across Ogoja.
One of Hon. Otoro’s earliest achievements was her successful motion for the restoration of power in sections of Abakpa that had been in total darkness for over three years. Her motion, fully supported by the Legislative Council, facilitated the rehabilitation of vandalized transformers serving Abakpa Bridge, Santa Maria Clinic, and Basin Road (UNICROSS Axis). This intervention restored hope to residents and rejuvenated small businesses affected by the prolonged blackout — a testament to her resolve to deliver solutions, not excuses.
Water, they say, is life. And for the people of Ogboja Community, life took a refreshing turn with the installation of a functional borehole facilitated through the proactive leadership of the Ogoja LGA Chairman, Hon. Chris Agbeh The project was commissioned by the Deputy Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Sylvester Agabi, alongside Hon. Thomas Aruku, Member representing Ogoja State Constituency.
The Ogboja Health Centre also benefits directly from this borehole, improving clean water access, sanitation, and healthcare delivery for residents.
A woman guided by faith and gratitude, Hon. Otoro began her leadership journey with a post-election thanksgiving at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Ogboja-Ogoja. She donated sacred vessels worth hundreds of thousands of naira in appreciation to God for His faithfulness throughout her 35-year career and victorious election journey.
At the same event, she launched her community empowerment efforts by sponsoring twelve children back to school, with an additional beneficiary sponsored by Hon. Sunny Achang, bringing the total to thirteen students.
Her message was clear: true empowerment begins with giving every child the opportunity to learn.
Recognizing agriculture as the heartbeat of the local economy, Hon. Otoro purchased and distributed farm chemicals to Some farmers in her ward to boost productivity. She also extended support to sick and vulnerable persons through financial and material assistance.
