The Chairman of the Cross River State Youth Council has emphasized the urgent need for a structured and intentional approach to youth development, following his participation at the recently held Abuja Dialogue on youth leadership.
Speaking after the high-level engagement in Abuja, the youth leader highlighted that the future of Cross River—and Nigeria at large—depends heavily on how well young people are prepared for leadership roles.
According to him, youth development must go beyond slogans and ceremonial inclusion, stressing that deliberate systems, mentorship, and institutional support are critical to nurturing capable leaders.
The Abuja Dialogue, which brought together key stakeholders from across the country, focused on repositioning youth leadership as a strategic pillar for national development. At the event, national leaders stressed that Nigeria’s large youth population would only become an advantage if supported by strong policies and structured opportunities.
Reacting to the discussions, the Cross River Youth Chairman noted that the conversations aligned with the realities facing young people in the state. He called for:
Increased investment in youth-focused programmes
Practical leadership training and mentorship
Inclusion of young people in governance and decision-making
He further urged stakeholders in Cross River State to begin implementing frameworks that will empower youths not just politically, but also economically and socially.
“Leadership is not accidental; it must be built through preparation, responsibility, and opportunity,” he reiterated, echoing sentiments shared at the national dialogue.
The Chairman also encouraged young people across Cross River, especially in the Northern Senatorial District including Ogoja, to take advantage of emerging opportunities and actively participate in shaping the future.
A Call to Action
The message from the Abuja Dialogue is clear:
Nigeria’s progress will depend on how well it trains, supports, and integrates its youth into leadership pipelines.
For Cross River State, this presents a timely opportunity to rethink its youth development strategy and position its young population as drivers of sustainable growth.
