The Federal Government, through the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), has placed the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and nine states on high Ebola preparedness alert following the outbreak of the deadly Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola Virus Disease in parts of East and Central Africa.
The states classified as high-risk include Lagos, Rivers, Kano, Enugu, Borno, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Taraba, Adamawa, and the FCT, due to their international airports, seaports, border routes, and heavy human movement.
Although Nigeria has not recorded any confirmed Ebola case, the NCDC warned that increasing regional transmission, international travel, and porous borders have raised the risk of the virus entering the country. The agency has activated its National Emergency Operations Centre and directed states to strengthen surveillance, isolation centres, and emergency response systems.
Health authorities revealed that the current outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain, for which there is currently no approved vaccine or targeted treatment, making early detection and strict preventive measures crucial.
Residents are advised to remain calm, maintain proper hygiene, avoid misinformation, and promptly report any suspected symptoms to health authorities.
